Karachi ranked as the most polluted city in the world on Tuesday, with its air quality deemed unhealthy due to high particulate matter (PM) levels, as per the Air Quality Index (AQI).
The city’s AQI was recorded at 179, posing significant health risks despite clear skies. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported a maximum temperature of 32°C and a minimum of 20.4°C, with light northern winds and a humidity level of 34%.
Health experts have cautioned that prolonged exposure to such pollution levels can lead to respiratory complications. They advised residents, particularly children and the elderly, to limit outdoor activities.
An AQI reading between 151-200 is classified as unhealthy, while levels ranging from 201-300 are considered hazardous. Readings exceeding 300 indicate extremely dangerous air quality.
Experts attribute the seasonal rise in pollution levels to winter conditions, changes in wind speed and direction, and dropping temperatures. During colder months, heavier air traps pollutants such as carbon and smoke closer to the ground, worsening air quality.
