KARACHI: Police have claimed a breakthrough in the gruesome murder of Athar Mateen, a senior producer of Samaa TV in Karachi on Friday morning near the Five Star Chowrangi in North Nazimabad.
Police said that have found important clues to the dacoits who murdered Athar Mateen.
On Friday morning, dacoits killed Athar Mateen during a robbery and his body has been moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Samaa TV’s Chief Crime Reporter Ahmar Rehman Khan said Mateen came across two men robbing a citizen at gunpoint when he left his house early morning. To prevent the mugging, he banged his car into the suspects’ motorcycle.
In retaliation, the men opened fire on the victim’s car and then fled from the crime scene, after robbing another man.
Khan said this was not an isolated incident of street crime in the area. The locality is popular for muggings and robberies, specially early morning and late at night.
Meanwhile, the police have sealed the crime scene and are collecting evidence. Further investigations are underway. Mateen is survived by a widow and two daughters.
After the crime was reported, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Saeed took notice and instructed Karachi’s additional IG to immediately prepare an investigation report.
He extended condolences with the bereaved family and promised to arrest the perpetrators as soon as possible.
Sindh Governor Imran Ismail has, on the other hand, said that the police should ensure protection of the life, property and honor of citizens. He urged the Sindh government to take practical steps for the eradication of lawlessness.
Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed, too, has sought a report from the chief secretary and Sindh IG.
