Investigators say suspect allegedly tracked cash withdrawals and guided accomplices to potential victims
KARACHI: Feerozabad Police have arrested an elderly man accused of acting as a strategist and lookout for an organised gang that allegedly targeted bank customers carrying large amounts of cash across Karachi.
According to police officials, the suspect, identified as Muhammad Mangi, used a carefully planned surveillance method to identify potential victims inside and around banks. Investigators alleged that he regularly visited financial institutions, observed customers withdrawing substantial sums of money and secretly passed their details to a four-member robbery gang waiting outside.
Police said the gang then followed the identified individuals and allegedly intercepted them after they left the banks, stealing cash during targeted robberies.
Police say suspect used disguise to avoid suspicion
Authorities claimed the suspect deliberately presented himself as a harmless elderly citizen to avoid attracting attention from bank staff, customers and security personnel. Investigators believe the disguise allowed him to blend into crowded banking halls while monitoring transactions without raising suspicion.
Police further stated that CCTV footage collected from several robbery incidents has helped investigators trace the suspect’s alleged activities and strengthen the case against the gang.
Officials also linked the group to several high-profile robberies, including an incident two years ago in which a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was allegedly robbed of Rs800,000 after withdrawing cash.
Raids continue to arrest remaining gang members
During interrogation, police claimed Muhammad Mangi admitted involvement in multiple robbery cases. Authorities further alleged that he has a previous criminal record and was earlier implicated in a murder case connected to a robbery.
A formal case has been registered against the suspect, while investigators continue collecting evidence to support the prosecution.
Meanwhile, police have launched raids across different parts of Karachi to arrest the remaining members of the alleged gang, who remain at large. Authorities said the operation will continue until all suspects linked to the organised robbery network are apprehended and brought before the courts.
