KARACHI: A Karachi resident lost his car and mobile phone after a man posing as a potential buyer allegedly robbed him at gunpoint. The incident occurred after the victim advertised his 2022-model vehicle for sale through an online application.
The complainant, Usman, lives in the Tariq Road area. He told police that a prospective buyer contacted him and arranged to inspect the vehicle.
Suspect Asks for Test Drive Before Robbery
According to Usman, the suspect asked him to bring the car near a school in Block 3 of Delhi Mercantile Society. The man showed interest in buying the vehicle but requested a test drive.
Usman said the suspect drove towards Liberty Chowk, where another man was waiting. The second suspect joined them, and they continued towards Shahrah-e-Faisal.
During the journey, both men allegedly pulled out firearms. They snatched Usman’s mobile phone, forced him out of the car and fled with the vehicle.
The victim said he could identify the suspects if police presented them before him.
Police Register Case at Ferozabad Station
Police registered a case at Ferozabad Police Station and began investigating the incident. Authorities are working to trace the suspects and recover the stolen vehicle.
The robbery highlights the risks people can face when meeting strangers through online vehicle-sale advertisements. Criminals may pose as genuine buyers to gain access to a vehicle before carrying out a robbery.
Safety Precautions for Online Vehicle Sales
People selling vehicles privately should take precautions when arranging inspections and test drives. Meeting in a busy, secure location and informing trusted people about the appointment can reduce some risks.
Sellers should also verify a prospective buyer’s identity and avoid handing over vehicle keys without safeguards. Where possible, they should arrange test drives with another person present. The investigation into Usman’s case is ongoing, and police have yet to publicly identify the suspects.
