Communications minister announces work on new Sukkur-Hyderabad-Karachi motorway will begin this year as government seeks improved Sindh connectivity
KARACHI: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has said the existing Karachi-Hyderabad motorway does not qualify as a motorway in its current condition, while announcing plans to begin work on a new motorway project connecting Sukkur, Hyderabad and Karachi this year.
Speaking to journalists after holding talks with transporters at Governor House in Karachi, Khan questioned the status and condition of the existing Karachi-Hyderabad route.
He said the federal government did not want to become involved in matters that could trigger disputes over the road. However, he stressed the need for improved motorway infrastructure connecting Karachi with Hyderabad, Sukkur and other parts of the country.
New Motorway Project to Begin This Year
Khan announced that construction work on a new motorway connecting Sukkur with Hyderabad and Karachi would start during the current year.
The proposed project aims to strengthen road connectivity across Sindh while improving the highway network linking Karachi, the countryโs largest commercial centre and port city, with northern regions.
The announcement comes amid continuing concerns over the condition, capacity and motorway standards of the existing Karachi-Hyderabad corridor.
Furthermore, authorities have faced calls to improve road infrastructure and address issues affecting freight operators and other motorists using the busy route.
Government Moves to Address Transportersโ Demands
Meanwhile, Khan said the government had resolved several concerns raised by transporters during their discussions at Governor House.
According to the minister, authorities immediately addressed issues that did not require lengthy administrative procedures.
However, he acknowledged that several outstanding demands require formal government processes before authorities can implement them.
Consequently, the government has formed multiple committees to examine those matters and complete the necessary formalities.
Khan said officials would proceed with the required procedures as the government works to resolve remaining transport-sector concerns.
The proposed motorway project is expected to form part of broader efforts to improve Sindhโs road connectivity and strengthen transportation links between Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur.
