Court Finds Negligence in Orangi Town Tragedy
A local court in Karachi has ruled against Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) in a fatal gas explosion case. The court found the company guilty of negligence. It ordered SSGC to pay Rs30 million in compensation to the affected family within one month.
The verdict was announced by Senior Civil Judge Salman Amjad Siddiqui. The case was filed by a citizen named Aliza. She lost both her parents in the tragic incident. The explosion occurred in October 2022 in Orangi Townโs Millat Colony.
The court confirmed that the deaths were caused by a gas leak inside the house. It stated that the company failed to ensure proper maintenance of its gas lines. This failure led to the deadly explosion.
The ruling highlights the importance of safety standards. Gas companies are responsible for protecting lives and property. Any negligence can result in severe consequences.
Plaintiffโs Claims Supported by Evidence
The plaintiffโs lawyer, Usman Farooq, argued that SSGC ignored repeated complaints. Residents had reported gas leakage in the area multiple times. However, the company did not take timely action.
The lawyer stated that SSGC is responsible for gas distribution and maintenance. He claimed that the companyโs failure directly caused the explosion. The plaintiff initially sought Rs42.8 million in damages.
On the other hand, SSGCโs legal team denied all allegations. They argued that no gas leak existed in the companyโs pipeline. They also claimed that the plaintiff was not a registered consumer. According to them, the compensation claim was not valid.
However, the court rejected these arguments. It noted that an SSGC witness accepted the gas pipe presented as evidence. This played a key role in the decision. The court concluded that the explosion was caused by a gas leak. It also ruled that preventive measures were not taken.
Compensation Awarded Under Legal Framework
The court issued its decision under the Fatal Accidents Act. It ordered SSGC to pay Rs15 million for each victim. This brings the total compensation to Rs30 million.
The judgment emphasized the legal duty of utility companies. They must ensure safe infrastructure and timely maintenance. Failure to do so can lead to legal action.
The court also highlighted the human cost of negligence. Losing family members in such incidents causes deep emotional and financial damage. Compensation aims to provide some relief to victimsโ families.
This case sets an important precedent. It reinforces accountability in public service sectors. It also sends a clear message about safety compliance.
Authorities and citizens alike are expected to take note of this ruling. It may encourage stricter monitoring of gas systems. It could also lead to improved response to public complaints.
The decision marks a significant step toward justice for the affected family. It also underlines the need for better safety measures in urban areas like Karachi.
