The Karachi Industrial Water Park (TP-1) has been inaugurated to treat municipal wastewater for industrial use. The project aims to conserve freshwater resources and make more water available for Karachi’s residents.
The facility will eventually provide up to 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of recycled water. Phase I will supply industries with 35 MGD of treated wastewater, while Phase II will add another 65 MGD.
Phase II Construction Begins
Officials have also launched groundbreaking work for the second phase alongside the inauguration. Authorities expect the second phase to finish within six months, allowing TP-1 to reach its full capacity by 2027.
Once completed, the project will provide up to 100 MGD of treated water for industrial processes. Consequently, businesses will have less need to draw freshwater from sources that support household and drinking needs.
The initiative will also give municipal wastewater a productive use instead of allowing it to become an environmental burden. By recycling wastewater, the project seeks to improve resource efficiency while supporting Karachi’s growing industrial sector.
Project Targets Long-Term Water Security
The Sindh government is advancing the water park with support from public and private sector stakeholders. Officials see the initiative as part of broader efforts to address Karachi’s long-term water challenges.
Moreover, the project aims to promote sustainable urban development while reducing pressure on freshwater supplies. Industries will use the recycled water for processing, while authorities have clarified that the treated supply will not serve as drinking water.
By expanding recycled water supplies, TP-1 could help Karachi manage its limited freshwater resources more efficiently. The project therefore represents an important step toward strengthening the city’s water security and environmental sustainability.
