Kamal Azfar
Veteran Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and former Sindh governor, Barrister Kamal Azfar, passed away in Karachi on Monday at the age of 87 after a prolonged illness. The news was confirmed by PPP Senator Waqar Mehdi, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the seasoned politician.
According to Senator Mehdi, details regarding the time and location of Azfar’s funeral prayers will be shared later, likely after the arrival of his children from abroad. The arrangements are being coordinated with the family to allow time for loved ones to pay their respects.
Kamal Azfar was a distinguished figure in Pakistan’s legal and political spheres. A barrister by profession and a devoted member of the PPP, Azfar was closely associated with party founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and later served as a trusted aide to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
In 1995, he was appointed governor of Sindh by Benazir Bhutto, a role he assumed after resigning from the Senate. His appointment marked a significant chapter in his political journey and reflected the high regard in which he was held by the party leadership.
Throughout his career, Azfar played a pivotal role in shaping legal and political discourse, especially in matters related to governance and democratic reforms. He was also known for his active engagement in civil society and for championing democratic values.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed profound grief over Azfar’s passing. In a statement, Shah highlighted the late barrister’s long-standing contributions to the political landscape of Sindh and Pakistan. “Kamal Azfar’s political services will always be remembered,” he said, extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and praying for the departed soul’s eternal peace.
PPP Senator Sherry Rehman also took to her official X (formerly Twitter) account to pay tribute. “Grieved to see Barrister Kamaluddin Azfar pass away,” she wrote, remembering him as a dedicated public servant who held multiple important positions, including that of governor.
Rehman recalled his close collaboration with Benazir Bhutto on various local government initiatives and his lifelong commitment to political activism.
The death of Kamal Azfar marks the end of an era for the PPP and Pakistan’s democratic movement. His legacy as a principled lawyer, seasoned politician, and tireless advocate for public welfare will continue to inspire generations to come.
