Four festivals scheduled in Kaghan Valley have been cancelled due to rising flood threats. Authorities announced the decision as heavy rains increased cloudburst and flash flood risks.
The district administration cancelled the events planned from July 25 to 29. Officials prioritised public safety amid worsening weather conditions across the mountainous region.
Assistant Commissioner Balakot Hasrat Khan confirmed the cancellation on Friday. He said authorities suspended the Education Learning and Grooming Festivals because of imminent weather threats.
Around 12,000 students from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were expected to attend the programmes. Organisers had planned events at Mahandri, Jarid, Naran, and Kaghan.
Authorities Prioritise Student Safety
Hasrat Khan stressed that officials could not endanger students’ lives. Therefore, the administration decided to cancel all scheduled activities without delay.
He said protecting children and other participants remains the administration’s highest priority. Moreover, officials continue monitoring weather developments across the valley.
The Assistant Commissioner described conditions in the mountainous region as highly unpredictable. Consequently, authorities remain on high alert for sudden natural disasters.
He referred to recent videos showing mud and rocks rushing through the valley. Although the weather appeared clear, the dangerous flow developed within moments.
Tourists Urged to Avoid Unnecessary Travel
The sudden incident forced tourists to flee for safety. Furthermore, officials warned similar events could occur without advance notice.
Authorities advised tourists to postpone unnecessary visits to Kaghan Valley until conditions improve. They also urged travellers to follow official instructions throughout the ongoing weather emergency.
Officials continue assessing the situation while monitoring rainfall across vulnerable areas. Meanwhile, residents and visitors should remain cautious as flood risks persist.
