ISLAMABAD โ K-Electric has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to reduce electricity charges by Rs5.02 per unit for consumers in their June 2025 bills, citing a sharp drop in fuel costs during March.
If approved, this would amount to a total refund of Rs6.79 billion for customers in Karachi โ marking the seventh consecutive monthly reduction in fuel charges under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) mechanism.
The public hearing on K-Electricโs petition is scheduled for May 22.
The utility said the continued decline in global fuel prices and increased reliance on more affordable electricity from the national grid contributed to the cost reduction. Since the downward FCA trend began in September 2024, monthly refunds have steadily grown โ from Rs0.17 per unit in September to over Rs3 per unit in recent months, culminating in the largest refund yet for March.
However, the proposed relief would not apply to lifeline users, protected residential consumers, prepaid meter users, or electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
If approved, the latest adjustment would offer significant relief to most residential, commercial, and industrial consumers in Karachi, reflecting a sustained improvement in power generation efficiency and cost management.
