Jordan’s King Abdullah II has ordered security forces to respond firmly after gunmen killed people during a funeral service at a church in southern Jordan. The attack took place on Friday in Karak governorate, targeting Saint George’s Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hamoud.
Authorities reported that the attackers opened fire indiscriminately for several minutes, killing nine people and injuring 40 others. Meanwhile, security agencies have launched an investigation and are searching for those responsible.
King Orders Security Review and Firm Action
King Abdullah chaired a National Security Council meeting on Saturday, where he condemned the shooting as a terrorist act. He stressed that authorities would show no leniency toward anyone threatening the lives and safety of Jordanians.
Furthermore, the monarch ordered officials to strengthen security measures, pursue the perpetrators and hold anyone supporting or justifying the attack accountable under the law. He also directed authorities to review their response procedures and improve preparedness against future threats.
The government has increased security at shopping centres, foreign embassies and other locations across the country. In addition, officials are working to counter misinformation and prevent the incident from creating fear or division among communities.
Investigation Continues as Security Tightens
Authorities have not publicly identified the attackers or confirmed whether they had links to any known militant organisation. However, investigators continue gathering evidence as security personnel search for suspects.
The shooting has shocked Jordan, where attacks against Christian communities remain uncommon. The church was holding a funeral when the gunmen launched their attack, triggering panic among mourners and forcing people to seek shelter.
Jordanian officials have condemned the violence and pledged legal action against those responsible. The country has also declared three days of mourning following the deadly incident.
The attack has renewed attention on security arrangements and efforts to counter extremist ideology. King Abdullah has called for a coordinated response to protect citizens, preserve national unity and prevent similar incidents in the future.
