Root Reappointed After Ben Stokes Retirement
Joe Root has been reappointed as England’s Test captain as the team prepares for a major leadership transition.
Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has also been named head coach of England’s men’s Test side. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed both appointments on Thursday.
Root returns for a second permanent spell as captain following Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket.

Fleming Signs Four-Year Deal as Test Head Coach
Stephen Fleming has signed a four-year contract as England’s new Test head coach.
His agreement will run until September 2030. However, he will not take charge during England’s upcoming home series against Pakistan.
Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for the three-match Pakistan series.
The opening Test is scheduled to begin at Headingley on August 19. Fleming is expected to officially take charge before England’s winter tour of South Africa.
Fleming replaces Brendon McCullum, who was removed as Test coach following disappointing results.
England suffered a heavy Ashes defeat in Australia before losing the home Test series against New Zealand.
McCullum will remain in charge of England’s white-ball teams. This means Fleming and McCullum will hold separate responsibilities across the international formats.
Fleming played 111 Test matches for New Zealand and captained the national side in 80 Tests.
He became one of New Zealand’s most respected leaders during his international career. He later built a strong reputation as a coach, particularly in franchise cricket.

Appointments Bring Bazball Era to an End
The appointments mark the end of England’s Test partnership between McCullum and Stokes.
Their aggressive approach became widely known as “Bazball” after they took control of the side in 2022.
England had won only one of their previous 17 Tests when the pair began their leadership period.
The team responded by winning 10 of its first 11 Tests under Stokes and McCullum.
