A jeweller in Lahore’s Ichhra market allegedly disappeared with 20 kilogrammes of gold, causing panic among traders. The gold had been entrusted to him for safekeeping, intensifying concerns over large-scale fraud.
Background of the Incident
Traders reported that Sheikh Waseem Akhtar, a jeweller operating in the busy Ichhra market, vanished several days ago. Before leaving, he spread false news about a relative’s death in Karachi, raising suspicion. Multiple jewellers had deposited gold with him as amanat, trusting him to safeguard their valuables.
Discovery of Missing Gold
Four days after his disappearance, Akhtar’s employees opened the shop, attracting other traders. Upon breaking open the vault, they found the boxes empty. Investigations revealed that Akhtar had even sold his house for Rs60 million before fleeing, indicating premeditation.
CCTV Footage Confirms Theft
CCTV footage surfaced showing Akhtar leaving the shop with the gold. The video has heightened fears among Ichhra traders, who now worry about possible large-scale fraud.
Police Investigation Underway
A case has been registered at Ichhra police station by a complainant jeweller. Investigators have recorded statements and stated that more FIRs may be filed if additional claimants emerge. Police emphasized that early findings suggest a financial dispute, and reports of multiple complainants or organized theft are not verified at this stage.
The SP Model Town is overseeing the investigation, while DIG Operations has requested a detailed report. Authorities confirmed that efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspect “at the earliest.”
Impact on Ichhra Market
The incident has shaken trader confidence in Lahore’s Ichhra jewellery market. Many jewelers are now reconsidering the security of depositing valuables outside their own premises. Authorities have assured that a swift investigation will help restore trust among market participants.
