Jennifer Garner’s fans have supported her decision to avoid portraying Ben Affleck’s love interest in his upcoming Netflix film Animals. Ben Affleck is former husband of Jennifer Garner.
Affleck revealed that longtime friend Matt Damon was initially set to play the lead role alongside Garner in the upcoming project.
The actor told Entertainment Weekly that he immediately thought Garner would be perfect for the role.
Affleck also said working with Garner could have helped both actors spend more time with their three children, Violet, Fin and Samuel.
However, Damon eventually left the project because of scheduling conflicts and delays surrounding production of his upcoming film The Odyssey.
As a result, Affleck took over Damon’s role, creating the possibility of appearing opposite his former wife.
Affleck said he discussed the situation with Garner, who decided they should avoid working together romantically on screen.
According to Affleck, Garner believed such a pairing could bring unwanted personal baggage into the film.
Despite the decision, Affleck praised Garner as a “fabulous performer” and said he would like to work with her again.
The actor also described their current relationship as a strong friendship and expressed gratitude for their positive connection.
Affleck said he did not want audiences to bring their personal history into a fictional relationship and potentially affect their viewing experience.
The former couple announced their separation in 2015 after 10 years together. They finalized their divorce in 2018.
Affleck and Garner continue to co-parent their three children, while maintaining a friendship following their split.
