US Vice President JD Vance has warned that negotiations with Iran will be lengthy and challenging despite recent signs of diplomatic progress. His remarks came as President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching a new agreement.
Vance said Iran’s leadership remains deeply divided, making negotiations more complicated. Consequently, he cautioned that the diplomatic process would likely be difficult and time-consuming.
He argued that some Iranian leaders want to move beyond the conflict. However, others continue to favour confrontation, creating obstacles for negotiators.
White House Balances Optimism With Caution
Vance said the United States must carefully navigate Iran’s internal divisions to achieve the best possible outcome. Furthermore, he described the negotiations as “messy” and said reaching an agreement would require patience.
His comments followed President Trump’s more optimistic assessment of the talks. Trump said significant progress had been made and claimed Iranian officials had sought renewed negotiations.
The US president also suggested both sides could know more within 48 hours. Therefore, he encouraged Iran to reach an agreement.
US Maintains Pressure During Negotiations
Despite the positive signals, Vance urged observers to manage expectations. He expressed confidence that the United States would ultimately secure a favourable outcome.
He also reiterated that Washington would continue using military, economic and diplomatic pressure to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Meanwhile, the White House continues pursuing negotiations while maintaining its broader strategy of pressure and deterrence.
