US Vice President JD Vance has sent a letter to senior Iranian official Mohsen Rezaei in an effort to revive peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The reported diplomatic outreach comes as US President Donald Trump considers renewed military strikes against Iran following the upcoming midterm elections.
Rezaei serves as secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and previously commanded the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The letter reportedly aims to determine whether both countries can establish a framework for negotiations and prevent further escalation.
Letter Seeks Framework for Renewed Negotiations
According to reports, Vance’s letter focuses on restarting diplomatic discussions rather than presenting a detailed peace agreement. The initiative seeks to explore common ground between the two countries amid continuing disagreements over security and Iran’s nuclear programme.
US officials have indicated that any renewed negotiations would need to address nuclear-related concerns. However, Washington and Tehran continue to disagree over the conditions required to resume formal discussions.
The reported outreach also follows diplomatic efforts involving regional intermediaries, including Qatar and other countries seeking to reduce tensions. Previous negotiations failed to produce a lasting agreement, leaving uncertainty over the future of the conflict.
Trump Clarifies His Position on Vance’s Outreach
Trump has offered a different explanation for the communication, saying Vance’s contact concerned medical supplies for Iran rather than peace negotiations. He also indicated that he had approved the vice president’s decision to proceed with the outreach.
Meanwhile, Iran has maintained that it remains open to diplomacy while preparing to defend itself against potential military action. Iranian officials have also raised demands involving economic relief and restrictions affecting the country.
The latest development comes amid concerns that renewed fighting could further destabilise the Middle East and disrupt international energy supplies. Whether the letter leads to direct negotiations remains uncertain, as both sides continue to face significant differences over the terms of a possible settlement.
