The Japanese Film Festival 2026 has opened at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, bringing Japanese cinema and culture to local audiences throughout September.
The Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi inaugurated the festival in collaboration with the Pakistan Japan Cultural Association, Sindh, and the Arts Council of Pakistan. The annual event, organized by the Japanese Consulate and Japan Foundation, aims to strengthen cultural ties through cinema.
The opening ceremony featured Children of the Sea, a Japanese animated film about a lonely teenage girl who develops a mysterious connection with two brothers raised by the ocean. The film explores themes of friendship, mystery and the deep sea.
Six Japanese Films Featured
This year’s festival features six films representing different genres and stories from Japan. Meanwhile, screenings will continue throughout September at selected venues across Karachi, giving audiences more opportunities to experience Japanese filmmaking.
Speaking at the ceremony, Consul General HATTORI Masaru welcomed the enthusiastic response from attendees and highlighted cinema’s cultural value. He expressed hope that the festival would create meaningful encounters, lasting memories and fresh perspectives among viewers.
Animator Shares Japanese Anime Influence
Guest of honour Shahzeen Khan, an animator associated with The Glassworker, also shared her creative journey with the audience. She explained how Japanese anime and cultural events supported by the Japanese Consulate influenced her early artistic development.
Khan also recalled her involvement with the pop-culture group Shonen Infinity, highlighting the role Japanese popular culture played in shaping her creative interests.
The festival provides Karachi audiences with an opportunity to explore Japanese stories, animation and artistic traditions. Furthermore, organizers hope the event will deepen cultural understanding and encourage stronger connections between Pakistan and Japan through film.
