World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the China Open in Beijing, delaying his return to competitive tennis.
The Italian confirmed the decision on Friday, saying his right knee is still not ready for competition.
Sinner Misses Beijing Title Defence
Sinner has not played since winning the Wimbledon title on July 12.
The five-time Grand Slam champion also missed the US Open because of the same knee problem.
Sinner was expected to return at the China Open, where he was due to defend his title.
However, he said he needs more time before returning to competition.
“I’m not ready to compete yet,” Sinner said, adding that he would work toward returning as soon as possible.
World No. 1 Ranking Under Pressure
Sinner’s extended absence could also affect the battle for the ATP world No. 1 ranking.
Alexander Zverev remains one of his closest rivals and defeated Sinner in the French Open before losing to him in the Wimbledon final.
Sinner’s withdrawal means he will miss another opportunity to collect points during the Asian swing.
Sinner’s 2026 Season Interrupted
Before his injury, Sinner had produced a strong 2026 season.
He won multiple major titles, including Wimbledon, and entered the summer as the leading player in the ATP rankings.
His latest withdrawal now leaves his return date uncertain as he continues his recovery.
