Senior Party Official Dies After Prolonged Illness
Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Secretary General Ameerul Azeem has died after a prolonged battle with cancer.
A party spokesperson confirmed his death, bringing an end to the career of one of the organisation’s most experienced political leaders.
According to a party statement cited by local media, his funeral prayers were scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday at Mansoorah in Lahore. Some reports carried different timing details, making the party’s latest announcement important for attendees.
Ameerul Azeem had served as the party’s secretary general since 2019.
He remained responsible for organisational coordination, political planning and communication between the central leadership and regional branches.
His death is expected to leave a major leadership gap within the party.
From Student Activist to National Political Leader
Ameerul Azeem was born in Lahore in 1958.
He completed his early education in Lahore before studying physics and mathematics.
He later earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of the Punjab.
His political journey began during his student years.
He was elected president of the Punjab University Students’ Union and later became the national head of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba, Jamaat-e-Islami’s student organisation.
His student activism placed him at the centre of campaigns demanding the restoration of elected student unions.
During the military government of General Zia-ul-Haq, he led a major march in support of student political rights.
He was later imprisoned for his role in the movement.
The experience established him as a prominent organiser and political campaigner.
It also strengthened his position within Jamaat-e-Islami’s national structure.
Decades of Service Within Jamaat-e-Islami
Before becoming secretary general, Ameerul Azeem served for several years as the party’s central information secretary.
He also held senior leadership positions in Lahore and central Punjab.
He was known for representing the party before the media and explaining its political positions on national issues.
In 2019, then-party chief Sirajul Haq appointed him secretary general following consultation within the party’s central leadership.
He continued in the position after Hafiz Naeemur Rehman became Jamaat-e-Islami chief in 2024.
During his tenure, Ameerul Azeem remained involved in political campaigns, internal organisation and public mobilisation.
He was also associated with movements supporting judicial independence and political reform.
His long career covered student politics, party communication, regional leadership and national decision-making.
