Thousands of students across Italy are expected to join nationwide demonstrations on Friday, October 30, 2026, demanding greater education funding, affordable housing and relief from rising living costs.
The protests come after weeks of student activism involving school occupations and temporary protest camps.
Security forces are preparing for possible clashes following violent demonstrations earlier this month.
Italian Students Protest Education Cuts and Rising Costs
Student organizations have criticized Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government over education spending and increasing defence expenditure.
Laura Teresi, an 18-year-old representative of the OSA student movement, said students would mobilize across several cities.
Protesters are demanding stronger support for schools, families and young people struggling with economic pressures.
The demonstrations coincide with a general strike called by the USB trade union.
Police Prepare for Possible Violence Across Italy
Authorities fear a repeat of the October 17 and 18 unrest in Milan.
During those demonstrations, groups of protesters reportedly set vehicles on fire and looted shops.
The government has since introduced stricter public gathering regulations and expanded detention provisions involving minors.
Meloni Government Announces Economic Relief Measures
The Italian government recently approved a €175.2 million support package for truck drivers, farmers and fishermen affected by rising fuel prices.
Meanwhile, the proposed 2027 budget includes financial assistance for young workers.
One measure would provide an annual €2,500 bonus for eligible employees under 30.
Experts Warn of Growing Youth Frustration
Political analyst Rosario Forlenza said young Italians increasingly feel excluded from political decision-making.
Psychotherapist Matteo Lancini also called for reforms to make schools more responsive to students’ needs.
The demonstrations highlight growing demands for affordable education, economic stability and greater opportunities for Italy’s younger generation.
