Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has ruled out forming a national unity government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the Democrats’ victory in the 2026 US midterm elections.
Lapid announced his position in a post on social media platform X on Wednesday. He argued that the American election results had significantly changed Israel’s political situation and eliminated the possibility of a unity government led by Netanyahu.
“The American election results this morning have an unexpected outcome: they eliminate any possibility of a unity government led by Netanyahu,” Lapid stated.
He further warned that Netanyahu’s continued leadership posed serious risks to Israel’s national security, democratic institutions and international reputation.
“Israel cannot afford to let him remain prime minister,” Lapid added.
The political development comes after Democrats secured control of both chambers of the US Congress, delivering a major setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
Trump has maintained strong support for Netanyahu, making the Democratic victory potentially significant for Israel’s political future.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s political bloc secured 53 seats in Israel’s 120-member Knesset. Jewish opposition parties won 48 seats, while Arab parties secured 19 seats.
The election outcome has intensified uncertainty surrounding negotiations to establish Israel’s next government.
