Concerns Rise Over Potential Restrictions on Defence Assistance
JERUSALEM: Israeli officials are increasingly concerned that deteriorating relations with the White House could affect military cooperation, with fears growing that continued disagreements may lead to restrictions on arms supplies and security assistance, according to a report published by Israeli newspaper Maariv.
The report stated that officials believe the widening dispute between Washington and Tel Aviv, particularly following the signing of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, could result in delays in weapons deliveries, limitations on military support, and potentially tougher measures if tensions continue to escalate.
According to the report, Israeli officials view recent remarks by US President Donald Trump criticising Israelโs military actions in Lebanon and his comments regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as signs of mounting American pressure behind the scenes.
Furthermore, officials believe Washingtonโs pressure campaign is likely to intensify as the United States moves forward with diplomatic efforts linked to its agreement with Iran.
Diplomatic Efforts Underway to Ease Tensions
Meanwhile, sources indicated that Trump has urged Netanyahu in recent weeks to adopt a more flexible approach regarding developments on Israelโs northern front. Officials said Washingtonโs demands reportedly include an Israeli withdrawal from five positions in southern Lebanon, a pullback from the Syrian Hermon region, and a reduction in military escalation that could complicate ongoing diplomatic initiatives.
Israeli officials reportedly argued that the United States will continue seeking commitments from Netanyahu regarding troop withdrawals and de-escalation measures.
In response, efforts are underway to repair relations with the White House. According to the report, Israeli officials are considering either arranging a meeting with President Trump or dispatching a senior delegation to Washington to address growing concerns. However, no formal response from the US administration has reportedly been received.
Earlier, Trump expressed support for Netanyahu ahead of Israelโs upcoming elections but also publicly criticised Israelโs conduct in Lebanon. He urged a more restrained military approach, arguing that excessive force risked undermining broader regional stability and diplomatic progress.
The developments highlight growing strains between two longstanding allies as regional diplomacy and security priorities continue to evolve.
