The Israeli military has launched an official investigation into the killing of a seven-month-old Palestinian infant in the occupied West Bank. The incident occurred during a shooting involving Israeli forces in the city of Hebron.
The case has triggered renewed scrutiny over the use of force in the region. It also comes amid rising tensions linked to ongoing violence in the West Bank since late 2023.
Baby Killed During Hebron Shooting Incident
According to Palestinian sources, the infant, identified as Sam Fahd Abou Haikal, was killed when Israeli forces opened fire on a family vehicle.
The child’s parents were also lightly injured in the incident. The shooting took place in Hebron on Friday.
Shortly after the incident, the Israeli military stated that its soldiers fired after “soldiers perceived a vehicle accelerating toward them”.
However, an initial internal review later concluded that the individuals inside the vehicle were “uninvolved civilians”.
Military Launches Formal Investigation
Following the preliminary findings, the Israeli military confirmed that a formal investigation has now been opened.
The military said, “Based on the findings of the preliminary examination, it was decided to open an investigation by the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division,”
It further added, “Upon its conclusion, the findings will be transferred to the Military Advocate General’s Office.”
The investigation will now examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine whether protocols were followed correctly.
Rising Violence in the West Bank
The West Bank has witnessed near-daily violence since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
The conflict began after Hamas launched an attack on Israel, leading to a large-scale Israeli military response in Gaza.

Data compiled from Palestinian health authorities indicates that at least 1,080 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 2023.

On the Israeli side, official figures report at least 46 deaths during the same period. These casualties include both civilians and security personnel killed in attacks or military operations.
