Israel’s domestic security agency, the Shin Bet, has filed a complaint against a television channel after it reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the United Arab Emirates.
Netanyahu’s office announced the complaint on Monday, marking Israel’s first acknowledgement that the prime minister had travelled to the Gulf state.
Shin Bet Seeks Action Against Channel 12
According to a statement from Netanyahu’s office, the Shin Bet asked the Chief Military Censor to prosecute Channel 12 over what it described as a serious violation of censorship rules.
The channel and other Israeli media outlets reported on Sunday that Netanyahu had travelled to the UAE.
Reports said he met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the visit. However, neither Israel nor the UAE has officially confirmed the meeting.
Netanyahu’s office said the report placed the prime minister, his wife and members of the delegation at risk.
The delegation reportedly included the head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency and other senior security officials.
Visit Linked to 2023 Warning Report
The reported visit came weeks after an Israeli media report claimed that Sheikh Mohamed had warned Netanyahu about the possibility of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.
According to the report, Netanyahu allegedly failed to pass the warning to Israeli security officials. Netanyahu has denied the allegation.
Israeli media reported that Netanyahu travelled to the UAE to ask Sheikh Mohamed to publicly deny that he had issued such a warning.
The prime minister’s office said the media report revealed details about the visit while Netanyahu’s aircraft remained outside Israeli airspace.
Mossad also condemned the publication, according to the statement.
Israel and UAE Relations
Israel and the UAE established diplomatic relations in 2020 under the US-brokered Abraham Accords. Since then, the two countries have developed diplomatic and economic ties, although sensitive security matters remain closely guarded.
For now, the UAE has not publicly confirmed Netanyahu’s reported visit or commented on Israel’s complaint against Channel 12.
