ISLAMABAD: The federal government has inducted 15 electric vehicles into the fleet of the Islamabad Capital Territory Traffic Police as part of efforts to modernize traffic management and reduce fuel expenses in Islamabad.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended a ceremony marking the launch of the environment-friendly vehicles. Officials said the initiative aligns with the governmentโs energy-saving policy and long-term sustainability goals.
According to authorities, the initial batch of eco-smart vehicles was procured under a plan developed before the recent Gulf crisis. The vehicles will now be deployed on major roads to improve traffic flow and enable faster response to incidents.
Each vehicle will operate with a dedicated team, including a captain, responders, and a driver, all equipped with specialized uniforms. This structured deployment aims to enhance operational efficiency and coordination on the roads.
Meanwhile, officials highlighted the vehiclesโ technical capabilities. Each unit can travel between 350 and 400 kilometers on a full charge. Fast charging takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes, while standard charging requires six to eight hours.
In addition, authorities projected significant cost savings. Compared to petrol-powered vehicles, each electric unit could save around Rs0.55 million per month. Consequently, officials estimate that the vehicles will recover their cost within 13 to 14 months.
Looking ahead, the government plans to add another 15 electric vehicles to the fleet. Overall, the initiative reflects a broader strategy to adopt cleaner technology while improving public service delivery in the capital.
