Islamabad police have arrested the suspect accused of killing Pakistan Air Force Group Captain Asim Tariq. The officer was fatally shot while trying to protect a woman in the federal capital. Authorities confirmed the arrest during a police operation on Sunday.
Police Capture Suspect After Fatal Shooting
According to police sources, the suspect, Saad Abbasi, was arrested within the jurisdiction of Khanna Police Station. However, investigators have not disclosed further details about the operation. The investigation into the case remains ongoing.
Police said Group Captain Asim Tariq intervened after witnessing a woman being allegedly harassed on Ninth Avenue. Reports stated the woman had just stepped off a motorcycle when the suspect allegedly grabbed her arm. Consequently, the officer stopped his vehicle and confronted the suspect.
Investigators said the suspect allegedly abused the officer before opening fire. Group Captain Asim Tariq sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to them. The woman later told police that the officer sacrificed his life while trying to protect her.
According to her statement, the suspect was her colleague who had offered her a ride to work. However, she claimed he diverted the motorcycle toward another route instead of the office. She also alleged that he grabbed her arm after she resisted.
Leaders Pay Tribute to Fallen PAF Officer
The martyred officer leaves behind his widow, a son, and a daughter. Reports said both the suspect and the woman worked at the same cash-and-carry store. Police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed grief over the officer’s death. He offered condolences to the bereaved family and sought a report from the Islamabad Inspector General of Police. Additionally, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised the officer’s bravery and extended sympathies to his family.
