Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had appreciated Pakistan’s efforts for regional peace. He added that the Iranian leader conveyed that the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding remained fully acceptable to Tehran.
The prime minister shared these remarks while speaking to media representatives alongside Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. He spoke after meeting President Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Leaders Discuss Regional Peace Efforts
Responding to questions about the Islamabad MoU, Prime Minister Shehbaz said Pakistan’s leadership remained united in advancing peace initiatives under the agreement. He stressed that Islamabad would continue efforts to promote dialogue and stability in the region.
The premier also expressed concern over tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. He noted that several friendly countries were working to reduce tensions and support diplomatic solutions.
During the meeting, Shehbaz told the Iranian president that regional peace was an urgent necessity. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to playing a constructive role in efforts aimed at reducing conflict.
Iran Signals Support for Islamabad MoU
According to the prime minister, President Pezeshkian praised Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives. He further stated that the Islamabad MoU remained fully acceptable to Iran and that Tehran was prepared to move the process forward.
Shehbaz also condemned ongoing violence and suffering in Lebanon. He described the situation as unacceptable and called for greater efforts to restore peace and stability.
The prime minister added that Pakistan and Lebanon would continue working together to support peace initiatives. He emphasized that cooperation among regional partners remained essential for addressing ongoing challenges and reducing tensions.
