Anti-Terrorism Court Grants Seven More Days
An Islamabad anti-terrorism court has extended the physical remand of suspect Saad Abbasi for another seven days.
Abbasi is accused of killing Pakistan Air Force Group Captain Asim Tariq in Islamabad earlier this month.
Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain heard the case on Monday.
The suspect was presented before the court after completing his initial seven-day physical remand.
Special Prosecutor Raja Naveed Hussain Kayani represented the prosecution during the hearing.
He requested an additional 15 days of physical custody to complete the investigation.
The court heard the prosecution’s arguments and initially reserved its decision.
It later approved a seven-day extension instead of the 15 days requested.
Abbasi was handed back to Islamabad police for further questioning.
The court ordered investigators to present him again on August 3, 2026.
Alleged Murder Weapon Recovered, Mobile Phone Still Missing
The prosecution informed the court that police had recovered the pistol allegedly used in the shooting.
Investigators claimed the weapon had been hidden after the incident.
Police are expected to examine the firearm as part of the forensic investigation.
The prosecution said the suspect’s mobile phone had not yet been recovered.
Authorities believe the device could contain information relevant to the case.
Investigators requested further custody to locate the phone and complete other evidence-gathering procedures.
The prosecution may also examine communication records, location data and the suspect’s movements before and after the shooting.
The court accepted that additional investigation was required but granted only seven more days of physical remand.
The allegations against Abbasi remain unproven and will be decided through judicial proceedings.
PAF Officer Was Killed While Intervening to Protect Woman
The shooting occurred in Islamabad on July 5, 2026.
According to police, Group Captain Asim Tariq intervened after seeing a man allegedly attempting to take a woman away by force.
Investigators claim Abbasi opened fire when the PAF officer stepped forward to help her.
Tariq was struck by gunfire and died from his injuries.
Islamabad police launched an immediate search operation following the incident.
The suspect was arrested within nine hours, according to the authorities.
Abbasi was initially sent to jail for a 14-day judicial remand to complete an identification parade.
Two eyewitnesses were reportedly available for the identification process.
After the parade, the prosecution requested his physical custody for further investigation and recovery of the alleged weapon.
The court granted the first seven-day physical remand on July 20.
That remand expired before Monday’s hearing, when investigators requested another extension.
Police will now continue questioning the suspect and attempt to recover the missing mobile phone.
Investigators are also expected to complete forensic reports and prepare evidence for future court proceedings.
