US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing growing pressure from Republican lawmakers following the party’s devastating defeat in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections.
Several Republicans reportedly blame Hegseth for encouraging President Donald Trump to launch military strikes against Iran without adequately preparing for the consequences.
According to CNN, dissatisfaction within the Republican Party could trigger impeachment proceedings against the Pentagon chief.
Could Pete Hegseth Face Impeachment?
Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has announced plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Hegseth next week.
Massie indicated that he would abandon the move only if the defence secretary resigned.
Other Republican lawmakers are reportedly considering a vote condemning Hegseth’s handling of the Iran conflict.
Why Are Republicans Blaming Hegseth?
Critics accuse Hegseth of presenting the Iran war as a short military operation.
However, the conflict has continued, creating economic pressure and growing public opposition.
US military spending on the war has reportedly exceeded $47 billion.
Higher living costs and fuel prices have also intensified voter dissatisfaction.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance have acknowledged that the war contributed to Republican election losses.
Will Trump Remove His Defence Secretary?
Despite the criticism, Trump publicly defended Hegseth, praising his performance.
However, CBS News reported that the president privately questioned advisers about Hegseth’s future.
Reuters also cited a Trump adviser suggesting that the defence secretary could face dismissal.
Pentagon Rejects Political Pressure
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell defended Hegseth and dismissed the criticism as politically motivated.
He maintained that Hegseth remained committed to serving throughout Trump’s presidency.
For now, no resignation or dismissal has been announced.
