Macklemore says he has been removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour after venues objected to his recent pro-Palestinian comments onstage.
The Grammy-winning rapper said several US venues told the tour promoter they would not allow him to perform as Sheeran’s opening act.
Macklemore Says Venues Blocked His Performances
Macklemore announced the decision on Instagram. He said Sheeran’s team ultimately removed him from the Loop Tour after venues raised concerns about his participation.
The rapper said he had previously expressed support for Palestinians. However, he suggested the issue became more significant because he was performing at major stadiums alongside one of the world’s biggest artists.
Macklemore said he holds no resentment toward Sheeran and considers him a friend. He added that their friendship would not prevent him from speaking about issues he believes are important.
Venues Cite Controversial Comments
The tour promoter, Messina Touring Group, confirmed that several venues had informed organizers they would not allow concerts featuring Macklemore.
The promoter said canceling the performances could affect the wider tour and hundreds of thousands of fans.
Among the venues is Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. Owner Robert Kraft said Macklemore’s removal followed his recent comments and what Kraft described as a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.
Kraft said the decision was not intended to dismiss Palestinian suffering or prevent advocacy for Palestinians.
Macklemore Defends His Message
Macklemore made the remarks during a September 5 performance at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.
While introducing his protest song “Hind’s Hall,” he said, “Free Palestine.” The song was inspired by protests supporting Palestinians and was named after Hind Rajab, a Palestinian child killed in Gaza.
Macklemore also addressed Jewish audiences during the performance. He said criticism of Israel should not be viewed as criticism of Jewish people and described his message as one supporting peace, dignity and equality.
The comments sparked criticism from fellow singer Pink and renewed debate over political expression at major music events.
Sheeran has not publicly commented on Macklemore’s removal from the tour.
