Senior Democrats are demanding transparency over US President Donald Trump’s reported use of artificial intelligence in government decision-making. Their concerns centre on whether chatbots, particularly Elon Musk’s Grok, influenced sensitive military or foreign policy discussions.
In a letter dated Wednesday, Congressmen Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia called for the preservation of official exchanges with AI chatbots. They argue that questions submitted by Trump and White House aides, alongside chatbot responses, qualify as presidential records under federal law.
Democrats Seek Records and White House Briefing
The lawmakers requested a closed-door briefing by November 11 to examine the administration’s use of artificial intelligence. They also want details about security protections and potential access by outside companies to sensitive conversations.
Their letter raised concerns about the possible use of privately controlled AI tools in government decisions, particularly those involving national security.
“If the American President is relying on the policy advice of a Musk-designed, Hitler-friendly chatbot with a predilection for child pornography in order to carry out his official duties, Americans have a right to know,” they wrote.
The statement refers to earlier controversies involving Grok, including reports of antisemitic outputs and sexualised images of children.
Grok’s Reported Role in Venezuela Discussions
The request follows reports that Trump spent hours using Grok during a December 2025 Oval Office meeting with Musk. During that meeting, Trump reportedly asked how Venezuelans might respond if US forces captured President Nicolas Maduro.
Grok reportedly suggested that many Venezuelans would welcome Maduro’s downfall. US forces seized Maduro weeks later, although no evidence has established that the chatbot determined or directed the operation.
Consequently, the lawmakers are questioning whether AI-generated advice played any role in sensitive foreign policy deliberations. They also warned that chatbot responses could contain inaccuracies or face manipulation.
Concerns Over AI and Military Decisions
The Democrats cited reporting about an AI-assisted intelligence error involving a Chinese vessel. They also referred to allegations that excessive reliance on artificial intelligence contributed to a US strike on an Iranian school.
The reported strike killed more than 100 children, according to the information cited by the lawmakers. However, neither episode establishes that Grok influenced those military decisions.
“If the United States military killed dozens of innocent schoolchildren based on the faulty advice of an AI chatbot, we have a right to know that too,” the lawmakers added.
Their concerns extend beyond Grok, focusing on the broader use of AI systems in government operations and military planning.
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini Also Included
The lawmakers want information about restrictions on entering classified material into chatbots and how officials preserve AI conversations. They also seek clarification about whether third parties can access those exchanges.
Their request covers several AI platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, an administration official told Politico that the government preserves all records required by law.
The dispute raises questions about accountability, data security, and oversight as government officials increasingly engage with artificial intelligence. For now, the lawmakers are seeking records and explanations rather than presenting evidence that Grok shaped specific military decisions.
