Irish middle-distance running champion Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34, prompting an outpouring of tributes across Ireland. Her family announced her death on Sunday, remembering an athlete who achieved major success on the international stage.
“At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones,” said a statement posted on the athlete’s Instagram account.
Mageean had been receiving treatment for bowel cancer after revealing her diagnosis in July 2025. She later disclosed that the disease had reached an advanced stage.
Her death comes just weeks after she married her long-term boyfriend in Belfast, marking a deeply painful loss for her family and the athletics community.
Ciara Mageean’s Battle With Cancer
Originally from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, Mageean remained positive throughout her illness. She continued to share messages of gratitude and encouraged others through her personal journey.
Following her diagnosis, she thanked supporters and described herself as “continuing to find the joy in everyday”.
In an interview in June, she also reflected on her sporting career and said she was “grateful” for having a career “that many others didn’t get to have”.
Despite her health challenges, Mageean remained an inspiration to many through her strength and determination.
A Remarkable Career in European Athletics
Mageean established herself as one of Ireland’s leading middle-distance runners. During her career, she set several national records and represented her country at two Olympic Games.
She competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics before returning to the Olympic stage at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
Her greatest achievement came in 2024, when she won the women’s 1,500 metres title at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. The victory marked a defining moment in her career.
However, an Achilles injury prevented her from competing at the Paris Olympics later that year.
Her European achievements also included a silver medal in the 1,500 metres in 2022 and bronze in the same event in 2016. Additionally, she secured second place in the 1,500 metres at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Tributes Pour In Following Mageean’s Death
Mageean’s death has prompted heartfelt tributes from sporting organisations and political leaders across Ireland.
“The country has lost a hero,” the Olympic Federation of Ireland said in a statement.
Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill also paid tribute, highlighting Mageean’s character beyond her sporting achievements.
“Beyond the medals, records and sporting accolades, Ciara will be remembered for her warmth, courage and tremendous strength of character,” O’Neill said.
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin said he was “deeply saddened” by Mageean’s “untimely passing”.
Mageean leaves behind a remarkable sporting legacy, defined by European success, national records and Olympic appearances. Her courage, warmth and determination will remain central to how Ireland remembers its athletics champion.
