Iran says missile and drone attacks targeted American military facilities as Qatar reports civilian casualty
Iranโs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it carried out coordinated missile and drone strikes against US military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, saying the attacks were retaliation for recent American strikes on Iranian targets.
According to Iranโs state broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC said its naval and aerospace forces jointly targeted eight US military sites, including Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and facilities linked to the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. The force stated that it used ballistic missiles and armed drones during the overnight operation.
The IRGC described the strikes as a response to recent US attacks on Iranian facilities in Sirik and Qeshm. Iranian media said the operation marked one of Tehranโs most significant direct military actions against US regional assets since the conflict began.
Retaliatory operation follows renewed hostilities
The latest escalation unfolded despite a recently signed memorandum of understanding, brokered by Pakistan, that aimed to halt the conflict which erupted on February 28. The agreement sought to reduce tensions and create a framework for negotiations, but the renewed military exchanges have raised concerns about the durability of the ceasefire efforts.
Iranian officials maintained that the operation was conducted in response to continued military pressure and emphasized that the strikes specifically targeted US military infrastructure.
Qatar reports civilian death during regional unrest
Meanwhile, Qatarโs Interior Ministry confirmed that a Qatari citizen was killed and another person injured after a vessel was located during a search and rescue operation off the countryโs coast.
Authorities said maritime patrols noticed the vessel had failed to return on schedule during routine monitoring by the General Directorate of Coasts and Border Security. Rescue teams later found the boat in the early hours of Sunday.
According to the ministry, preliminary findings indicated that the deceased suffered fatal injuries after being struck by shrapnel generated by ongoing military operations in the surrounding area. Officials said investigations into the incident are continuing.
