Iran also reiterates stance on Strait of Hormuz as military confrontation continues
TEHRAN: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Friday that it had carried out an attack against what it described as a United States special operations command centre at al-Tanf in southeastern Syria, saying the action was in retaliation for the killing of Iranian soldiers in Iranshahr.
According to Iranian state media, the IRGC said the strike targeted facilities associated with US forces at the al-Tanf location. However, Reuters reported that it could not independently verify the claim, while neither the US military nor the Syrian government immediately commented on the reported attack.
The United States previously announced in February that it had completed the withdrawal of its forces from the al-Tanf base, which is located near the border junction of Syria, Jordan and Iraq. The installation had long served as a strategic military outpost during operations against armed groups in the region.
Syria maintains neutrality
Meanwhile, Syrian authorities have repeatedly stated that they intend to avoid becoming directly involved in the wider regional conflict. President Ahmed al-Sharaa previously said Damascus would remain outside any military confrontation unless Syrian territory came under direct attack.
His remarks reflected Syria’s stated policy of limiting its involvement despite ongoing conflicts affecting neighbouring Lebanon and Iraq, where regional tensions have intensified in recent months.
Iran reiterates Hormuz position
Additionally, the IRGC stated that Iran continues to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz and warned that oil and gas exports through the strategic waterway would remain suspended for as long as US military operations against Iran continue.
The latest statements come as tensions between Tehran and Washington remain elevated following renewed military exchanges across the region. Diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities have yet to produce a breakthrough, while concerns persist over the potential impact of the conflict on regional security, global energy supplies and international shipping routes. Independent verification of the latest military claims remains unavailable.
