Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has arrived in Russia to attend the eighth Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit, as concerns grow over the possibility of renewed US military action against Iran.
Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB reported that Pezeshkian is scheduled to address the gathering of leaders from major natural gas-producing countries. The Iranian president may also hold bilateral meetings with other participating leaders during his one-day visit.
Pezeshkian and Putin Set to Meet
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Pezeshkian would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow this week.
Araghchi said the meeting would follow discussions held during Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Tehran on October 19.
The two countries are expected to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional and international developments. Their talks come as both governments face growing geopolitical challenges and shifting energy-market conditions.
Gas Summit Brings Major Producers Together
The eighth GECF summit brings together leaders and representatives of major natural gas-producing countries, including Iran, Russia, Qatar and Algeria.
The forum provides a platform for participating countries to discuss energy cooperation and developments affecting global gas markets.
Pezeshkian’s participation also offers Iran an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic contacts with other energy-producing nations. However, officials have not confirmed which additional leaders he may meet during the visit.
Renewed US Strike Threats Raise Tensions
The visit comes amid growing concerns about a possible resumption of US military strikes against Iran.
US President Donald Trump recently suggested Washington could launch another operation, referring to the possibility of further action under the name “Epic Fury.”
His remarks have increased uncertainty as Tehran faces pressure to reach an agreement with Washington.
The planned meeting between Pezeshkian and Putin could therefore provide an opportunity to discuss the wider regional situation alongside bilateral relations. However, the outcome of their talks and the prospects for easing tensions remain uncertain.
