Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed security concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz with Saudi and Omani officials. The talks came as regional tensions increased following drone attacks and disagreements over maritime access.
According to a statement shared on Araghchi’s private channel, he spoke with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and Oman’s officials on Monday. The discussions focused on regional developments, cooperation, and diplomatic efforts to improve stability.
The conversation between Araghchi and Faisal followed Saudi Arabia’s announcement that it had intercepted drones targeting its territory. Riyadh said Iran-linked groups in Iraq launched the drones.
Oman Proposes Regional Mechanism for Strait Management
Meanwhile, Oman has proposed a regional framework to manage the Strait of Hormuz, according to a Gulf source. The proposal includes a joint mechanism and voluntary fees for vessels using the strategic waterway.
The source said several regional countries support the proposal. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy routes, carrying a significant portion of global oil supplies.
Jordan and the United Nations have also called for maintaining calm. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres discussed regional tensions during a meeting in Amman.
They stressed the importance of maintaining the US-Iran ceasefire and restarting negotiations. They also called for ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz under international law.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amid Military Warnings
US President Donald Trump said Washington and Tehran were holding “good talks” and suggested a possible agreement could emerge. However, he warned that military action could resume if negotiations failed.
“We’re having good talks,” Trump said. “I think there’s a good chance that something could happen, and if it does, good; if it doesn’t, we go back to doing what we were doing two days ago.”
Iranian officials said diplomatic communication continued through mediators. However, Tehran rejected reports suggesting it requested negotiations.
Saudi Arabia reported that its air defences destroyed drones targeting petroleum facilities. Iran-backed groups in Iraq were blamed for the attacks.
Oil Prices Decline as Regional Uncertainty Continues
Oil prices declined following the pause in US-Iran hostilities. Brent crude and US West Texas Intermediate prices both dropped during early trading.
Meanwhile, Iran continued to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran said vessels could only pass through a route closer to its coastline.
The ongoing dispute has created uncertainty for global energy markets. The United States wants unrestricted maritime movement, while Iran insists on supervising transit through the waterway.
The situation remains fragile as diplomatic efforts continue alongside military preparations. Regional countries are now focusing on negotiations to prevent further escalation and protect energy security.
