Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has received US feedback on a proposed seven-day trust-building plan during talks with Qatari mediators in Doha.
Araqchi met the mediators on Tuesday night as Qatar continued efforts to bridge differences between Washington and Tehran. An official briefed on the negotiations provided the details to Reuters.
The Iranian foreign minister is expected to discuss the US response in Tehran on Wednesday.
Iran and US Disagree Over Plan’s Sequence
The main disagreement reportedly concerns the sequence of steps under the proposed plan.
The initiative aims to build confidence between Iran and the United States. It would also seek to revive an enhanced version of a memorandum of understanding signed by the two countries in June.
According to the official, both sides remain engaged through mediators as they work through the differences.
However, the disagreement over sequencing could affect how quickly the proposed measures are implemented.
Qatar Continues Mediation Efforts
Qatar has played a central role in carrying messages between Iran and the United States. On Tuesday, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said its mediation efforts were continuing. The ministry said recent days had seen several meetings and exchanges of messages between the two sides.
Qatar also said it was working to bridge differences and establish common ground between Washington and Tehran.
Meanwhile, the latest discussions follow separate contacts between Iranian and US officials through mediators.
Seven-Day Plan Builds on Earlier Understanding
Iran previously presented a seven-day proposal aimed at creating conditions for renewed negotiations. The plan is linked to an earlier US-Iran memorandum of understanding reached in June after mediation efforts involving Qatar and Pakistan. However, that framework later broke down amid disagreements between the two sides.
The latest proposal seeks to build on that earlier framework while addressing issues that prevented its implementation.
The two sides have also continued discussions over arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions and the broader conflict.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Key Issue
The strategic waterway remains an important part of the diplomatic discussions.
Iran has previously linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to conditions involving sanctions, hostilities and renewed negotiations. The waterway is a major route for global energy shipments.
Earlier reports said Iran’s seven-day proposal included steps toward reopening the strait and restarting negotiations over its nuclear programme.
However, Washington and Tehran have yet to resolve their differences over the terms and sequence of any agreement.
Araqchi to Discuss Response in Tehran
Araqchi is now expected to take the latest US feedback back to Tehran. The next discussions could determine whether the two sides can narrow their differences over the proposed sequence of measures. For now, Qatar remains involved in efforts to keep communication open between Washington and Tehran.
The latest exchange does not represent a final agreement. Instead, it marks another stage in ongoing diplomatic efforts to establish a framework for renewed negotiations and reduce tensions between Iran and the United States.
