Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that it will unveil new military targets and weapons, highlighting seven major underwater internet cables beneath the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions with the United States.
IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi made the remarks on Monday during a ceremony at Tehran’s Sacred Defense Museum, according to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB. He said the cables carried internet and commercial data traffic and warned that new targets would be announced.
Mohebbi also vowed to remove what he described as the remaining influence of the United States from the region. His statement followed earlier warnings from Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, who said Tehran could target underwater communications cables, data centres and artificial intelligence facilities linked to the United States if another war erupted.
Rezaei said these facilities had not yet been included among Iran’s targets but warned that they could face destruction if hostilities resumed.
The statements have raised concerns about the security of critical digital infrastructure across the Gulf. Damage to submarine cables could disrupt internet connectivity, financial transactions and international communications in affected countries.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important waterway for global energy shipments and regional connectivity. However, Iranian officials have not announced any confirmed attack on the cables, and their remarks remain warnings amid continuing regional tensions.
