Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has threatened to strike US military bases across the Middle East if Washington continues escorting vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
The warning comes amid escalating tensions over control of the strategic waterway. The United States has increased efforts to escort ships through the strait, while Iran has intensified its warnings against unauthorised maritime movements.
Iran Issues Warning to Washington
In a statement published on its Sepah News website, the IRGC warned that continued US military escorts could expand the conflict to American bases in the region.
The Guards described the message as a serious warning. However, the statement did not specify which bases could become targets or when any potential retaliation might occur.
The threat raises concerns about a broader confrontation between Tehran and Washington, particularly as both sides maintain military operations in the region.
Strait of Hormuz Remains a Flashpoint
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil and gas shipments. Before the conflict began in February, roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies passed through the waterway.
Iran has asserted control over the strait and regularly threatened vessels attempting to pass without its authorisation. Meanwhile, US forces have continued escorting ships through the area.
Iranian forces also reported that four vessels were struck in the wider Gulf region overnight as they attempted to navigate the waters.
Regional Security Concerns Grow
The latest warning comes as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict remain stalled. Washington has also maintained a naval blockade on Iranian ports, increasing pressure on Tehran’s economy.
Any attacks on US bases could draw other countries into the confrontation and threaten regional security. Furthermore, prolonged disruption to shipping could affect international energy supplies and push transportation costs higher.
For now, the situation remains volatile as military operations and diplomatic efforts continue.
