Foreign ministers discuss regional tensions, diplomacy and bilateral relations during telephone call
TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged Cyprus to ensure that foreign military bases on the island are not used by any party against Iran during a telephone conversation with Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos on Thursday.
According to Iranian officials, the two ministers discussed bilateral relations as well as recent regional and international developments.
During the call, Araghchi stressed the importance of preventing foreign military facilities in Cyprus from being used for operations that could threaten Iran’s security. The discussion comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East and increased diplomatic engagement among regional governments.
Cyprus reiterates commitment to international law
According to the Iranian account of the conversation, Kombos reaffirmed Cyprus’s commitment to international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
He also said the Cypriot government has remained in contact with the United Kingdom regarding the operation of foreign military bases on the island. According to the statement, Kombos said Cyprus seeks to ensure that such facilities are not used against any country, including Iran.
Britain maintains sovereign military base areas in Cyprus under longstanding bilateral arrangements. No statement from the British government regarding the reported conversation was immediately available.
Regional diplomacy also discussed
Araghchi also briefed his Cypriot counterpart on the latest diplomatic developments involving Iran’s negotiations with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
In addition, he discussed recent developments in Iran’s relations with Ukraine and Bulgaria, according to the Iranian readout of the call.
The conversation reflects continuing diplomatic contacts between Iran and regional partners as governments seek to manage rising tensions and address issues affecting regional security and maritime stability.
