Iran retaliated to the US attacks and struck two US destroyers. Iran also attacked in the US military base in Jordan. The attacks came in retaliation for US strikes on five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday.
Jordanian air defences intercepted 18 of 20 ballistic missiles launched from Iran.
The remaining missiles landed in open areas and caused no civilian casualties or infrastructure damage, officials said.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it struck a US military base in Jordan.
The IRGC also claimed attacks against American destroyers DDG-119 and DDG-53, which carry cruise missiles and advanced Aegis combat systems.
Iranian state media said the attacks represented a stronger response to what Tehran described as US aggression against Iranian vessels.
However, the claims of damage to the American destroyers have not been independently verified.
Naval tensions rise in Gulf
The missile attacks came as maritime tensions increased across the Gulf following US strikes against Iranian commercial oil tankers.
Iran’s navy warned tanker crews at ports in Kuwait and Bahrain to evacuate their vessels immediately.
The warning stated that anchored or docked tankers would become targets for Iranian military action.
Iran said it issued the warning in response to American strikes against several Iranian oil tankers.
Earlier, Iranian media reported that a US missile struck an Iranian tanker near Kharg Island.
The vessel reportedly came under attack about 7.4 kilometres from the island’s main anchorage area.
No casualties were reported, while the tanker’s crew evacuated safely.
Furthermore, Iranian state television reported another US attack against an Iranian oil tanker near Jask in southern Iran.
The latest developments have sharply increased fears of further military escalation across the Gulf and surrounding waters.
