Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei appointed Revolutionary Guards General Ali Abdollahi as the country’s military chief on Monday.
Khamenei also appointed Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi as commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He promoted Vahidi to the rank of major general.
The appointments mark Khamenei’s first senior military decisions since becoming Iran’s supreme leader. He assumed the position after his father died in US-Israeli strikes during the Middle East war.
An announcement on Khamenei’s official website confirmed both appointments. The statement said Abdollahi would serve as chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces.
Abdollahi Previously Led Central Military Command
Abdollahi previously headed Khatam al-Anbiya, Iran’s central military command. The organization coordinates operations across the country’s armed forces.
His previous role placed him at the center of Iran’s military coordination. His new appointment gives him a senior position within the country’s military leadership.
Meanwhile, Vahidi will lead the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps under the new leadership structure. His appointment also represents an important change within Iran’s powerful military organization.
New Military Chiefs Take Charge During War
Abdollahi has issued strong warnings during the ongoing Middle East conflict. Earlier this month, he warned regional countries against supporting the United States.
He said countries acting as defensive shields for the United States would face the consequences of the conflict. His remarks reflected Iran’s increasingly confrontational position during the war.
The appointments come as Iran continues facing major security challenges. The new military leadership will oversee the country’s armed forces during the ongoing regional tensions.
Khamenei’s selections could therefore shape Iran’s military strategy in the coming period. Both commanders now face the task of managing Iran’s military response amid continuing hostilities.
