ISLAMABAD: Iran has expressed interest in expanding trade and economic cooperation with Pakistan through the ports of Karachi and Gwadar. The proposal came during a meeting between an Iranian delegation and Pakistani business representatives in Islamabad.
Additionally, both sides discussed measures to strengthen bilateral commercial ties.
Trade Committee Reviews Economic Cooperation
According to Radio Pakistan, Iranian Industry, Mine and Trade Minister Mohammad Atabak led Tehran’s delegation and co-chaired the 10th session of the Pakistan-Iran Joint Trade Committee with Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan.
During the meeting, Atabak said Iran gives the highest priority to expanding comprehensive cooperation with Pakistan. Moreover, he expressed optimism that negotiations on the proposed Iran-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement were progressing steadily and could conclude successfully in the near future.
Meanwhile, Jam Kamal Khan stressed the importance of operationalising joint border markets to improve livelihoods in border regions. He said the private sectors of both countries already trust each other and remain prepared to increase trade. Therefore, he urged the creation of a seamless, structured and predictable business environment.
Connectivity and Trade Roadmap
The commerce minister also emphasised the need to finalise practical roadmaps that would elevate economic cooperation between Pakistan and Iran. Furthermore, a 22-member Iranian official delegation and a 16-member business team led by the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture are participating in the Joint Trade Committee meeting.
Pakistan and Iran have continued strengthening bilateral relations in recent months. Previously, both countries agreed to improve road and rail connectivity to boost trade opportunities. They also decided to fully activate the Pakistan-Iran Joint Transport Committee following discussions between Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan and Iran’s Minister of Roads, Urban Development and Transport, Farzaneh Sadegh, on July 25.
