Iran has been elected to the General Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference in Vienna. The selection came after IAEA member states voted on Iran’s membership during a General Committee meeting.
Iran secured enough support to join the committee despite reported efforts by the United States to prevent its selection.
Iran Secures IAEA Committee Seat
Iran’s mission to the United Nations said IAEA member states voted in favour of its membership.
The mission described the decision as support for Iran at the international nuclear agency.
Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi also addressed the vote.
He said the United States had made every possible effort to stop Iran from joining the committee.
However, Kamalvandi said those efforts did not succeed.
The development gives Iran a role on the General Committee during the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.
Vote Comes Amid Nuclear Dispute
The election comes as tensions continue between Iran and Western countries over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Earlier this month, the IAEA Board of Governors passed a resolution concerning Iran’s nuclear commitments.
The resolution referred the matter to the United Nations Security Council over alleged breaches of Iran’s nuclear non-proliferation obligations.
Iran rejected the move and described it as politically motivated.
The latest vote adds another development to the ongoing diplomatic dispute between Tehran and Washington at the IAEA.
Iran’s nuclear activities remain a major issue for the agency. Relations between Tehran and international nuclear inspectors have also faced continued challenges.
The committee election highlights the competing diplomatic positions surrounding Iran’s role within the international nuclear framework.
