State media unveils images linked to US-Israeli strikes
TEHRAN: Iranian state media has released what it described as the first footage showing damage to the Tehran compound of late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, offering the public its initial official glimpse of the site following the US-Israeli military campaign earlier this year.
The footage was broadcast on Thursday to coincide with Khamenei’s burial in his hometown of Mashhad after a week-long funeral procession that travelled through several cities in Iran and Iraq.
According to Iranian media, the video shows visible structural damage to sections of the compound that were reportedly struck during the opening phase of the conflict. Khamenei was killed on February 28, the first day of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which also claimed the lives of several senior officials and members of his family.
The release of the footage marks the first official acknowledgment by Iranian authorities of the physical damage sustained at one of the country’s most closely guarded political and religious sites.
Video accompanies nationwide funeral ceremonies
Iranian authorities timed the release to coincide with the final burial ceremony, attended by millions of mourners following days of processions across Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala and Mashhad.
State television presented the images as part of its extensive funeral coverage, portraying the compound as a symbol of sacrifice and national resilience. Officials have repeatedly described the ceremonies as a demonstration of unity and continuity following months of conflict.
Conflict continues to shape regional tensions
The release comes as tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel remain high despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. Analysts say the decision to publicize the damage reflects Tehran’s attempt to reinforce its narrative surrounding the conflict while highlighting the impact of the strikes on key state institutions.
Meanwhile, international attention remains focused on the broader regional situation, as military developments and diplomatic negotiations continue to influence security across the Middle East.
