Iran has rejected US President Donald Trump’s plan to claim control of the Strait of Hormuz. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi called the proposal unrealistic and provocative.
Gharibabadi said the strategic waterway cannot change ownership through political statements or military pressure. He also warned that Iran would not surrender to American threats or displays of force.
The Iranian diplomat said Tehran controls decisions involving the strait. He added that Iran would continue its blockade until Washington accepts what he called defeat.
Iran Challenges Trump’s Claims
Trump said Friday that the US Navy had enforced a complete blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. He also vowed to declare the waterway US territory after defeating Iran.
Additionally, Trump urged Americans to accept slightly higher gasoline prices during the ongoing conflict. He claimed the United States had full control over the strategic waterway.
However, Iranian officials strongly disputed those claims. Ibrahim Zolfaqari, spokesperson for Iran’s central military headquarters, also rejected American control.
Tehran Demands US Withdrawal
Zolfaqari said no vessel could cross the strait without Iran’s permission and supervision. Meanwhile, Tehran has repeatedly linked reopening the waterway to several conditions.
Iran wants the United States to end its intervention and naval blockade. Tehran also demands that Washington fulfill requirements under the June framework agreement.
Consequently, the dispute has intensified tensions between Iran and the United States. Any prolonged blockade could also affect global shipping and energy markets.
