The offer by Pakistan to establish a cease-fire between Iran and the United States was rejected by Iran on Monday. It is reported that Iran has refused to open up the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for establishing the cease-fire. According to an Iranian official, it looks like America is not seriously considering establishing a long-term ceasefire, hence the rejection.
Tehran demands lasting peace
Pakistani diplomats had proposed a ceasefire that they thought would reduce tensions in the area. Iran’s government accepted the proposition, but stated they would not be cowed into making decisions against their will nor make them within deadlines. In other words, Iran’s stance is that the solution reached should mark the permanent end of hostilities and not just a temporary ceasefire.
This move comes at a very crucial moment where the conflict between Iran, the US, and Israel is disrupting world oil supply lines. This is because the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway used by oil tankers that cannot operate due to the ongoing tension.
Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts continue
Pakistan has also been proactive in its efforts to act as a mediator in this conflict. In fact, according to Islamabad officials, they have proposed a ceasefire plan where there would be an immediate ceasefire and then a discussion to reach a conclusive deal within 15 to 20 days. Diplomats believe that Pakistan will not lose sight of this initiative.
It is clear that this latest move only adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing negotiations between a number of other countries. Iran has made it clear that they need to address certain key issues before considering the opening up of their sea passage. It is becoming increasingly evident that the situation is deteriorating with each passing day.
