Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed Tehran’s readiness to join the Makkah Defence Alliance, describing the initiative as an opportunity to strengthen unity among Muslim countries. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Pezeshkian said Iran welcomed the agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
He stressed that Muslim nations should cooperate rather than divide themselves into rival groups. However, he acknowledged that Tehran had not yet received complete details about the agreement or the decisions made by its current members.
Pezeshkian Calls for Unity Among Muslim Nations
Pezeshkian said Iran was prepared to participate in the initiative despite lacking detailed information about its framework. He presented the alliance as a potential platform for Muslim countries to resolve differences and strengthen regional cooperation.
Furthermore, the Iranian president said he had conveyed a message to Saudi Arabia through Pakistan’s prime minister. He suggested that Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s holiest cities, could play a central role in promoting unity across the Muslim world.
Pezeshkian also argued that stronger cooperation among Muslim countries could help address regional security challenges. Nevertheless, he did not explain how Iran would formally join the alliance or whether member states had extended an invitation.
Alliance Members Consider Wider Regional Cooperation
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement in August 2026. The pact establishes a collective defence framework under which an armed attack against one member is treated as an attack against all.
Moreover, Turkish officials have previously indicated that the agreement could eventually expand to include other Muslim-majority countries, potentially including Iran. The alliance’s members are continuing discussions on its implementation and future arrangements.
Pezeshkian’s latest remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing disagreements involving Iran, the United States and Israel. His statement signals Tehran’s interest in participating in a regional security initiative, although formal membership arrangements remain unclear.
