United States expresses ‘concerns’ regarding political unrest in Pakistan

WASHINGTON: The United States has expressed its concern over the possibility of election-related violence in Pakistan. This comes as the country prepares for polls, from which former prime minister Imran Khan has been barred. John Kirby of the White House National Security Council expressed concern about actions, especially violent ones, that could destabilize Pakistan or other counterterrorism partner countries.

“We’re obviously concerned about any actions — particularly violent actions — that can contribute to instability in Pakistan or, frankly, any other country with whom we share a set of common interests when it comes to counterterrorism,” said John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council.

“So we’re watching it with concern, of course,” he told reporters.

“Pakistan is a partner, particularly when it comes to the counterterrorism threat in that part of the world. And we have every expectation that they will remain so,” Kirby added.

Kirby’s comments came in response to inquiries about whether violent extremists might exploit the ongoing political turmoil. This concern arises as Pakistan, the world’s fifth-most populous country, heads into its election season.

As Pakistan’s current government’s term comes to an end, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has stated his intention to submit a summary to President Dr. Arif Alvi for the dissolution of the National Assembly. The current administration took over after Imran Khan was removed from office through a no-confidence vote. Following his removal, a significant number of members from Imran Khan’s party also resigned from the National Assembly.

The United States has exercised caution in its statements regarding Imran Khan and the upcoming election. This approach aims to avoid stirring up conspiracy theories.

In addition to political uncertainties, Pakistan is also contending with an increase in terrorism, particularly after the termination of a ceasefire with the militant group Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.
