US President-elect Donald Trump has warned that there will be “massive repercussions” in the Middle East if the approximately 101 Israeli hostages held by Hamas are not released by the time he takes office on January 20, 2025. Trump’s statement came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to accept ceasefire and hostage exchange offers during President Joe Biden’s administration.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “If the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date I proudly assume office, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity.” He added that those responsible for holding the hostages would face severe consequences.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has lasted for over 14 months, has led to significant casualties, with Israel estimating that 101 Israelis remain captive. The toll of the violence has been devastating, with over 44,000 Palestinians killed and more than 105,000 wounded, according to reports from the United Nations. The true number of Palestinian casualties is believed to be higher, with some estimates suggesting 200,000 deaths. Additionally, Israel has detained over 10,000 Palestinians.
Hamas has claimed that 33 Israeli hostages have been killed due to Israeli airstrikes, warning that continued Israeli actions would result in further deaths of captives. Despite calls from activists in Israel for a ceasefire and a hostage exchange, Netanyahu has been accused of obstructing efforts to end the conflict.
Trump, who has been a staunch supporter of Israel, has criticized Biden’s approach and pledged stronger support if he assumes the presidency.
